The Art of Learning: Extracting Wisdom from Every Error
Share
All of us have made a mistake in our lives, one way or another. We are told that mistakes are normal, but sometimes our fear of failure gets in the way. We might be hesitant to step out of our comfort zone and make any errors. Sometimes we start thinking about society and how they perceive us after we make these mistakes. It’s normal and quite common for us to try to strive for perfection, but we must remember that not only is perfection impossible, but we must also always strive for progress. I encourage you to reframe your perspectives on any errors or mistakes within your life. What if instead of seeing an error as weakness, but as an opportunity for growth? Mistakes are a vital aspect of our lives because they facilitate learning and a chance to learn something new about ourselves.
Embracing Imperfection
Since childhood, we are taught “practice makes perfect”, but what we aren’t told is that practice comes with mistakes. How would we get good at something or become more knowledgeable if we don’t try? For example, when you try out a new hobby, sport, or activity, you first have to get comfortable being uncomfortable. If it’s painting, you must get used to the way the brush feels, how it aligns with the canvas, how the colors blend, and so much more. The only way to get comfortable is to push yourself out of your comfort zone and allow room for error. The silver lining to these errors lies in the opportunities for progression, growth, and further education.
Becoming Comfortable in the Uncomfortable
It’s easy to stick to what we know, avoiding things that challenge us, and being complacent. When we push ourselves to try new things and take risks, there lies an opportunity for self-discovery and growth. In the beginning, you may feel afraid, awkward, or uncertain; this is normal. I encourage you to take small steps at a time and gradually step out of your comfort zone. In these moments of discomfort is where we truly learn, grow resilience, and find courage to face and confront your fears. A good way to overcome your fear is knowing that you really don’t know how anything will play out. It’s important that we think positively and shifting our perspective. Instead of assuming the outcome will be poor, think to yourself “I won’t know unless I try.” Instead of asking yourself, “What if the event goes horribly?”, instead ask yourself, “What if the night is amazing?”
Shifting Our Mindset
There is so much mystery in life and there is a lot of beauty behind that. As individuals, we are eager to have control over all aspects of our life, but that just isn’t realistic. With that being said, it is important for us to understand that this is a journey, we must embrace the steps along the way. The errors we face are opportunities for us to develop and grow as individuals. It all starts with a shift of your mindset, instead of seeing your errors as failures, see them as valuable learning experiences. When we face errors, there is a chance for us to reflect, identify what went wrong, and how we can correct this error accordingly.
Finding Opportunity in Adversity
Max Lucado stated “The worship of safety emasculates greatness. No wonder Jesus wages such a war against fear.” This quote has resonated deeply with me since I first heard it. When we are filled with fear, it is much harder to reach our full potential. We must remind ourselves that with determination and effort, we are capable of accomplishing anything we set our minds to. It’s okay to make mistakes along the way; they are opportunities for growth and improvement in every aspect of our lives. When we let go and allow life to play out, we become fearless and allow life to exceed our expectations. Lucado also said, “the fear filled can not dream wildly,” and this conveys the idea that when fear dominates our thoughts, our ability to envision bold and ambitious dreams is hindered. Fear restricts our creativity and imagination, preventing us from pursuing extraordinary goals. Essentially, it emphasizes how fear can stifle our capacity to dream big and reach for greatness.
Embracing the Journey
The art of learning isn’t about perfection, but embracing our journey, flaws and all. Mistakes are an inevitable part of our journey and the ability to extract meaning from our errors shows true wisdom. The next time you are faced with an error, don’t be discouraged. Remember that this is an opportunity for growth, a chance to learn about the world around us, and even learn more about ourselves. It isn’t the destination that defines us, but the journey we take to get there.
